weekly Assignments
Weekly/Daily Routine:
Classroom Library Books~ Every day your child should bring home a library book from our classroom library. Please listen to your child read out loud the first quarter, fill in the slip, and return the book and the slip with your child. These books go towards the Reading Goal activities at the end of the nine weeks. Each 2nd grader must have 30 points by the end of the quarter. Each book is worth 1 point. If a student reads a book here at school and passes an AR Test on that story that is also worth 1 point.
Spelling~ A spelling list will be sent home every Monday. This list will have our spelling words, Word Wall Words (highlighted), and sentences on it. The test every Friday will be over the sentences on the list, as well as 2 sentences that I make up using the Word Wall Words. There will also be two "challenge words" every week. These will be two words that I give the students as bonus or extra credit on the test. The words usually are taken from reading vocab, science, holidays, etc. If the student spells the word correctly on the test, he/she gets a bonus point. If he/she does not spell it correctly, there are no points taken off. So, it never hurts to try.
Reading~ We will have a weekly reading story from our reading books. Vocabulary for the weekly story will be sent home every Monday. Please have your child read the vocabulary to you until he/she is comfortable with it, sign it, and send it back with him/her. The children then read the list to me for points towards a reward. You have until Friday of that week to return the vocabulary. We will have a weekly test over the story, vocabulary, phonics, and comprehension skill for that week. The Reading textbook is also sent home every Tuesday so your child can read the weekly story out loud to you. This counts towards their reading goal, but also helps them become more fluent and gain better comprehension from the story.
Math- Your child will have addition and subtraction Time Tests for the first semester. Once we get to January, students who have passed the addition and subtraction tests will begin multiplication tests. We have a new math series this year that has many online features and is aligned perfectly to the Common Core.
Science- Second graders love science! We study life, earth and physical science in our classroom. Our science lessons involve discussions, reading, experiments, activities, and hands-on projects.
Cursive- This year we will be teaching cursive as the enrichment portion of Tiger Time.
Language- Our language curriculum deals with writing, literature activities, and parts of speech.
